7 Flossing Secrets for a Brilliant Smile

Chances are, you already have the #1 secret weapon for healthy teeth. The reason I call it a secret weapon is that it's likely hiding in your bathroom cabinet or tucked away in a drawer. It's that small spool of floss you once received free from your dentist or purchased after being motivated by some "floss evangelist".

Long forgotten little spool of floss...go dig it up, and read on!

While most people know how to correctly brush their teeth, many simply have no clue when it comes to flossing teeth--which is why the floss ends up is some forgotten spot. In fact, there are millions of people who do not bother to floss their teeth.

The Importance of Flossing
It may be important to understand that flossing teeth not only keeps them healthy, but can help you to have whiter teeth as well. Flossing teeth removes many food particles that are caught between teeth. Eventually, if not removed, these food particles and bacteria can build up causing plaque and in extreme cases, tooth decay.

How to Floss
Now that you understand the importance of flossing, it is important to understand the correct way to floss, so that you can enjoy a bright smile with the healthiest teeth possible. Here are 7 secrets to flossing for healthier, whiter teeth and a more brilliant smile:

Floss Secret #1:

Choose at least eighteen inches of floss. Wrap the floss around your index finger for the best hold. Make sure that you have a strong grasp on the floss before beginning.

Floss Secret #2:

Use the floss gently in a sawing motion. Be sure not to force it between your teeth. It is best to start in the back, with the rear molars, and then proceed forward one tooth at a time.

Floss Secret #3:

The key to properly flossing teeth is to work the floss into a "C" shape. Gently scrape the floss in between and around each tooth. Start at the bottom of each tooth, near the gum and work your way upward until you feel a slight resistance.

Floss Secret #4:

Once you finish with a tooth, be sure to move up the floss, ensuring that you are using fresh floss for each tooth. Keep repeating this pattern until you have properly flossed all your teeth.

Floss Secret #5:

Once you have finished flossing all teeth, rinse your mouth with cool, fresh water. This will wash away any debris that has been dislodged. Rinsing your mouth will also let you know if your gums are bleeding from flossing.

Floss Secret #6:

Choosing the correct floss is almost as important as the actual act of flossing your teeth. Be sure that you choose floss that will easily and comfortably fit between your teeth. You can use waxed or un-waxed floss, depending on your preference. For children, there are flavored flosses available that may help in teaching your children the proper flossing procedure.

Floss Secret #7

Flossing teeth should be done each time you brush in order to see a brighter smile and whiter teeth.

The benefits of a happy, healthy smile are immeasurable!
