More than 90 million people suffer from chronic halitosis or bad breath. This condition can seriously limit social activity and even become a barrier to success in a career or business. People with this condition may not be aware of the negative effects, and may wrongly attribute them to actions, attitudes or bad luck. Often, the result is low self confidence, which, in itself creates further problems.
Countless over the counter breath fresheners at best mask the real problem, leaving the person unconfident as to the condition of his breath, and wondering when the freshener will wear off. At worst, masking the problem with a breath freshener may be dangerously hiding a seriouis underlying medical condition.
The Scientific Origin of Bad Breath
In many cases it originates from the gums and tongue. The odor is caused by bacteria on decaying food particles. This decaying food material produces a gas called hydrogen sulfide. This sulphur compound is what we smell as bad breath.
Causes Due to Poor Oral Hygiene--And Their Cures
Bad breath is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene. Proper brushing including brushing of the tongue, cheeks and the root of the mouth will remove bacteria harboring food particles. Flossing will remove bacteria and trapped debris between teeth.
Potentially Dangerous Underlying Medical Conditions
More serious medical problems can also cause bad breath. Diabetes, kidney failure or liver malfunction may first be evident as changes in breath odor. Xerostomia (dry mouth) may be caused by medications or cancer treatments resulting in bad breath. Stress, dieting, snoring and hormonal changes also produce bad breath. Lastly, certain foods such as garlic, curry, onions, coffee and pepper can produce odors even 72 hours after ingestion.
What You Can Do
The chronic problem of bad breath needs to be medically assessed if all the above thorough oral hygiene practices have been performed. Do not fool yourself into thinking that mouthwash, deodorizing sprays or tablets are the answer. You may have a serious undiagnosed medical condition. If bad breath persists for more than 21 days, see your dentist or physician!!
